Each holiday season, The Salvation Army engages in the tradition of "staffing the kettles" to promote the plight of the needy in Louisville, Kentucky. This practice is critical to The Salvation Army's cause, as the money it raises supports the organization’s programs for the rest of the year. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of Louisville Metro residents and businesses, The Salvation Army can continue to provide valuable programs such as a Transitional Housing,Center of Hope Emergency Shelter, four Boys & Girls Clubs, three Corps Community Centers, disaster services and more.
Another major component of our holiday tradition is the Angel Tree Program, in which members of the community adopt child "Angels" and provide them with gifts of clothing and toys. During this program, we partner with Toys for Tots, Kroger, Wave-3 and many other area businesses and agencies. Volunteers are needed throughout the entire process including the application period, staffing adoption booths at three area malls, helping in the warehouse, and distribution of the gifts. Last year, almost 14,000 children from over 6,200 families received gifts, and generous volunteers donated over nineteen thousand hours of their time!
Volunteers are essential for the smooth operation and execution of Christmas assistance to thousands and help make it possible for us to carry out our work of "doing the most good" for those in the most need. Through these programs, the energy and spirit of our community is focused on a common goal, and by joining in this community effort, you will make a difference in the lives of many of our neighbors.
